Who is Dr. Maxwell Maltz?

Dr. Maxwell Maltz (March 10, 1899 – April 7, 1975) wrote “Psycho-Cybernetics,” the first popular work on self-image psychology. Published in 1960, “Psycho-Cybernetics” remains one the classics of self-help, self-improvement, and personal development.

To date, “Psycho-Cybernetics” has sold over 30 million copies.

Dr. Maltz earned his M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1923.  He went to Europe to study plastic surgery and returned  to New York City to establish a practice.

He joined many international surgical organizations and was a guest lecturer.

Although he was successful as a plastic surgeon, Dr. Maltz noticed that some of his patients continued to imagine themselves as disfigured. They remained unhappy and insecure even after successful surgeries.

These patients suffered the same ill-effects in their everyday lives as they had before their surgeries. As a result, Dr. Maltz began to explore the unconscious world of “inner scars,” rather than the outer ones that he could treat with surgery.

Dr. Maltz first recounted this unexpected exploration “New Faces, New Futures.” Dr. Maltz, increasingly as much a psychologist as a surgeon, posited that if people hold a faulty image of themselves in imagination, a successful surgery did not matter.

If a patient continued to view him or herself as ugly or disfigured, their self-perception remained in the subconscious mind. If this remained unchanged, the patients looks did not seem to matter.

In addition, Dr. Maltz realized that humans are teleological beings. This means that we are shaped and formed by the ends we choose. (“Telos” comes from the Greek for “end” or “purpose.”)

Drawing on guided missile technology of his day, he said the mind was a “servo-mechanism.” Aim it and it will make all the adjustments it needs to reach its desired destination.

“Psycho-Cybernetics” was a an instant bestseller. It had an eager audience of athletes including the Green Bay Packers of the Vince Lombardi era.

Dr. Maltz became a popular motivational speaker and workshop presenter throughout the 1960’s and the early 1970’s.

Why I Like Maxwell Maltz, What I Learned from Him, and Why I Included Him in this Website

I like Maxwell Maltz because he must have been a fine person and a fine physician. Although he is the least charismatic of my success experts, he must have been a caring and healing presence.

He speaks of patients that he treated with Psycho-Cybernetics instead of surgery when none was warranted. And he must have worked with many patients with successful surgeries that still imagined themselves disfigured.

For me, he exemplifies the ethos that underlies all of self-help, self-improvement, and personal development. One person inspires another and that inspiration ripples throughout the pond of life.

Like so many others, I learned about self-image from Maxwell Maltz. Not surprisingly, my first exposure to the term “self-image” was through Psycho-Cybernetics.

This concept is the key to understanding why a person can be what I call “a fan” of self-improvement and still find success elusive. If you try to follow the dictums of so many good and worthy self-improvement writers without changing your self-image, your way will be wrought with frustration, disappointment, and a bewildering sense of “Why doesn’t this stuff work for me?”

And this is the reason I included Maxwell Maltz’ work in this website. Unless you understand self-image, self-improvement is little more than well-intended advice.

And it’s good advice. However, it clashes with who you believe yourself to be.

This situation does not lead to success. It leads to hard work and what some might call “hard luck.” Fortunately, luckily, gratefully, you can access your imagination, enter the theater of your mind, and let your neurons do the heavy lifting.

Now that’s a plan! And it is successful every time because that’s the way your mind works.

Video #1 – Maxwell Maltz Quotes: Psycho-Cybernetics and Self-Image

In the first video, I compile four Maxwell Maltz quotes for you about self-image. Self-image is the unconscious image that essentially determines what we become.

Change your self-image and you will change your life.

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • The ”self-image” is the key to human personality and human behavior. Change the self image and you change the personality and the behavior.
  • Our self image, strongly held, essentially determines what we become.
  • Our self-image and our habits tend to go together. Change one and you will automatically change the other.
  • This is where you will win the battle / in the playhouse of your mind.

Video #2 – Maxwell Maltz Quotes: Psycho-Cybernetics and Self-Esteem

Low self-esteem is at the root of self-talk like “I’ve never done anything like this before. I can’t do it. Why bother?” It is as subtle and limiting an impediment to success as one can imagine.

If this is an issue for you, I conclude this video with the good news that comes with even the least recognition of low self-esteem.

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • Low self-esteem is like driving through life with your hand-break on.
  • Of all the traps and pitfalls in life, self-disesteem is the deadliest, and the hardest to overcome, for it is a pit designed and dug by our own hands, summed up in the phrase, “It’s no use – I can’t do it.
  • Failure feelings – fear, anxiety, lack of self-confidence – do not spring from some heavenly oracle. They are not written in the stars. They are not holy gospel. Nor are they intimations of a set and decided fate which means that failure is decreed and decided. They originate from your own mind.
  • We are injured and hurt emotionally, Not so much by other people or what they say and don’t say, but by our own attitude and our own response.”

Video #3 – Maxwell Maltz Quotes: Psycho-Cybernetics and Fast Change

In this video, I offer you some thoughts about the fastest way to change. Get a new picture of yourself and your imagination will do wonderful things for you.

Why? Because you will begin to become more and more familiar with a new sense of who you are. And your wonderful mind will do the rest.

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • Self-image sets the boundaries of individual accomplishment.
  • Times will change for the better when you change.
  • Realizing that our actions, feelings and behavior are the result of our own images and beliefs gives us the level that psychology has always needed for changing personality.
  • You can always find the sun within yourself if you will only search.

Video #4 – Maxwell Maltz Quotes: Psycho-Cybernetics and Imagination

In the fourth video, I explore the power of imagination based on four Maxwell Maltz quotes. Success is a feat of imagination followed by action.

Therefore, engage your imagination, take action, stay out of your own way, and good things happen. How simple is that?

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • For imagination sets the goal picture which our automatic mechanism works on. We act, or fail to act, not because of will, as is so commonly believed, but because of imagination.
  • Study the situation thoroughly, go over in your imagination the various courses of action possible to you and the consequences which can and may follow from each course. Pick out the course which gives the most promise and go ahead.”
  • Begin to imagine what the desirable outcome would be like. Go over these mental pictures and delineate details and refinements. Play them over and over to yourself.
  • Thus man of all creatures is more than a creature, he is also a creator. Man alone can direct his success mechanism by the use of imagination, or imaging ability.

Maxwell Maltz Quotes

Our self image, strongly held, essentially determines what we become.

The ”self-image” is the key to human personality and human behavior. Change the self image and you change the personality and the behavior.

You can always find the sun within yourself if you will only search.

Loneliness is caused by an alienation from life. It is a loneliness from your real self.

If you make friends with yourself you will never be alone.

Times will change for the better when you change.

Accept yourself as you are. Otherwise you will never see opportunity. You will not feel free to move toward it; you will feel you are not deserving.

Close scrutiny will show that most “crisis situations” are opportunities to either advance, or stay where you are.

For imagination sets the goal picture which our automatic mechanism works on. We act, or fail to act, not because of will, as is so commonly believed, but because of imagination.

Low self-esteem is like driving through life with your hand-break on.

Man maintains his balance, poise, and sense of security only as he is moving forward.

Often the difference between a successful man and a failure is not one’s better abilities or ideas, but the courage that one has to bet on his ideas, to take a calculated risk, and to act.

Realizing that our actions, feelings and behavior are the result of our own images and beliefs gives us the level that psychology has always needed for changing personality.

Remember you will not always win. Some days, the most resourceful individual will taste defeat. But there is, in this case, always tomorrow – after you have done your best to achieve success today.

Self-image sets the boundaries of individual accomplishment.

Self-improvement is the name of the game, and your primary objective is to strengthen yourself, not to destroy an opponent.

Take the trouble to stop and think of the other person’s feelings, his viewpoints, his desires and needs. Think more of what the other fellow wants, and how he must feel.

To change a habit, make a conscious decision, then act out the new behavior.

To think, when one is no longer young, when one is not yet old, that one is no longer young, that one is not yet old, that is perhaps something.

We are built to conquer environment, solve problems, achieve goals, and we find no real satisfaction or happiness in life without obstacles to conquer and goals to achieve.

We must have courage to bet on our ideas, to take the calculated risk, and to act. Everyday living requires courage if life is to be effective and bring happiness.

You make mistakes. Mistakes don’t make you.

You may live in an imperfect world but the frontiers are not closed and the doors are not all shut.

Your most important sale in life is to sell yourself to yourself.

What is opportunity, and when does it knock? It never knocks. You can wait a whole lifetime, listening, hoping, and you will hear no knocking. None at all. You are opportunity, and you must knock on the door leading to your destiny. You prepare yourself to recognize opportunity, to pursue and seize opportunity as you develop the strength of your personality, and build a self-image with which you are able to live / with your self-respect alive and growing.

One of the reasons it has seemed so difficult for a person to change his habits, his personality, or his way of life, has been that heretofore nearly all efforts at change have been directed to the circumference of the self, so to speak, rather than to the center.

When you see a thing clearly in your mind, your creative “success mechanism” within you takes over and does the job much better than you could do it by conscious effort or “willpower.”

Study the situation thoroughly, go over in your imagination the various courses of action possible to you and the consequences which can and may follow from each course. Pick out the course which gives the most promise and go ahead.

People who say that life is not worthwhile are really saying that they themselves have no personal goals which are worthwhile. Get yourself a goal worth working for. Better still, get yourself a project. Always have something ahead of you to ”look forward to” to work for and hope for.

We are injured and hurt emotionally, Not so much by other people or what they say and don’t say, But by our own attitude and our own response.

Stand up to crises. Don’t let them throw you! Fight to stay calm… even surmount the crisis completely and turn it into an opportunity. Refuse to renounce your self-image. No matter what happens, you must keep your good opinion of yourself. No matter what happens, you must hold your past successes in your imagination, ready for showing in the motion picture screen of your mind. No matter what happens, no matter what you lose, no matter what failures you must endure, you must keep faith in yourself. Then you can stand up to crises, with calm and courage, refusing to buckle; then you will not fall through the floor. You will be able to support yourself.

Thus man of all creatures is more than a creature, he is also a creator. Man alone can direct his success mechanism by the use of imagination, or imaging ability.

Of all the traps and pitfalls in life, self-disesteem is the deadliest, and the hardest to overcome, for it is a pit designed and dug by our own hands, summed up in the phrase, “It’s no use – I can’t do it.

Begin to imagine what the desirable outcome would be like. Go over these mental pictures and delineate details and refinements. Play them over and over to yourself.

It is an old psychological axiom that constant exposure to the object of fear immunizes against the fear.

This is where you will win the battle / in the playhouse of your mind.

You can do only one thing at a time. I simply tackle one problem and concentrate all efforts on what I am doing at the moment.

You are embarking on the greatest adventure of your life — to improve your self-image, to create more meaning in your life and in the lives of others. This is your responsibility. Accept it, now!

Our self-image and our habits tend to go together. Change one and you will automatically change the other.

An idea accepted as true from any source can be every bit as powerful as hypnosis.

Emptiness is a symptom that you are not living creatively. You either have no goal that is important enough to you, or you are not using your talents and efforts in a striving toward an important goal.

Failure feelings – fear, anxiety, lack of self-confidence – do not spring from some heavenly oracle. They are not written in the stars. They are not holy gospel. Nor are they intimations of a set and decided fate which means that failure is decreed and decided. They originate from your own mind.

Happiness isn’t something that happens to you. It is you yourself do and determine upon.

I may be a mistake maker, but I’m also a mistake breaker.

You are not your mistakes

You are not your failures.
