Who is Les Brown?

Leslie Calvin Brown (born February 17, 1945) has as an interesting and inspirational  story. It is as rousing as any talk he delivers.

A twin, he and his brother Wes were born in a low-income section of Miami, Florida. Six weeks later, they were adopted by Mamie Brown who raised them.

She was undoubtedly a strong and principled woman. And Les makes no secret of his love for his mother. To this day, he calls himself “Mrs. Mamie Brown’s baby boy.”

In the fifth grade, he was labeled mentally disabled. Years later, a substitute teacher named Leroy Washington told him that someone else’s opinion of him does not have to be his reality.

This remains one of his signature quotes.

Through sheer drive and persistence, Brown became a disc jockey at a Miami radio station. Always on the lookout for opportunity, he took over for a radio personality who had too much to drink!

This was the break for which he had been waiting and preparing.

In the late 1960’s, Brown moved to Columbus, Ohio to work for WVKO radio. He got involved in community activism.

Eventually, he won a seat in the Ohio State Legislature and served three terms. He served with distinction.

Brown passed more legislation during his first term than any other freshman assembly member in history. And he chaired the Human Resources Committee in his third term.

In 1981, Brown moved back to Florida to care for his mother. By 1986, he was a full-time speaker. And this after talking himself out this career for 14 years!

Subsequently, he received these awards:

  • National Speakers Association’s highest award, the Council of Peers Award of Excellence (CPAE) in 1989.
  • Emmy for “You Deserve.” PBS stations used these speeches for fundraising in 1990.
  • Golden Gavel Award from Toastmasters International in 1991.

In addition, Les hosted a syndicated TV show called “The Les Brown Show” from 1993-1994.

His most famous works are “Live Your Dreams” and “It’s Not Over Until You Win.” He has presented his talks before audiences as large as 80,000.

At this writing, Les hosts a radio show on KFWB in Los Angeles every weekday from 2-4 PM (Pacific time).

Why I Like Les Brown, What I’ve Learned from Him, and Why I Included Him in this Website

I admit that when I started this website, I did not know a lot about Les Brown. However, I did know enough to watch his videos and that made me wish I had discovered them sooner!

I like Les Brown because of he did things that he had no business doing. Whether it was his initial success in radio, his career in politics, or his signature success as a speaker, there is no way he should have been able to do any of these.

Of course, he did do them. And this in spite of the fact that the odds were, shall we say, against him.

In fact, he is candid about how he talked himself out of speaking for 14 years before he got started in earnest! The most intensely personal of my featured success figures, you’ve just got to like the guy.

Here is what I learned from Les Brown. What’s your goal? Multiply it by ten and don’t fool around with “how?” “How?” is none of your business!

Here is the meaning I make out of this. Get the dream, make it bigger, and ignore the fact that you haven’t a clue about how to make it happen… yet! Get the dream, get started, and “how” will become apparent if you just don’t quit.

This is one reason why I included Les and his work on this website. However, the other reason is the absolutely boundless energy and unbridled enthusiasm of his presentations.

He has a gift for infusing what some might call “platitudes” with vibrancy and a cracking electricity that makes them come alive. He makes you believe you can do it even if you were quite sure you couldn’t.

What a gift!

Video #1 – Les Brown Quotes: Overcome Obstacles in Your Mind

In the first video, I’ve complied four Les Brown quotes that reveal why you must first change if you want to succeed. The only real obstacles are the ones in your own mind. Clear up those obstacles and you will find your way around any others.

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • You don’t get in life what you want; you get in life what you are.
  • You cannot expect to achieve new goals or move beyond your present circumstances unless you change.
  • The things you want are always possible; it is just that the way to get them is not always apparent. The only real obstacle in your path to a fulfilling life is you, and that can be a considerable obstacle because you carry the baggage of insecurities and past experience.
  • Forgive yourself for your faults and your mistakes and move on.

Video #2 – Les Brown Quotes: Program Your Own Life

If you let life or others program you, you are in a world of hurt! In this video, I present the reason why this can happen and what you can do about it.

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • Other people’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality.
  • If you don’t program yourself, life will program you.
  • If you put yourself in a position where you have to stretch outside your comfort zone, then you are forced to expand your consciousness.
  • Act the way you want to be and soon you’ll be the way you act.

Video #3 – Les Brown Quotes: Get Rid of Fear

Fear is as real as you allow it to be. Les Brown offers some very simple and powerful ideas that neutralize fear and help you “take a running leap” toward success.

Fear is as real as you allow it to be. Les Brown offers some very simple and powerful ideas that neutralize fear and help you “take a running leap” toward success.

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • Fear does not have any special power unless you empower it by submitting to it.
  • Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears.
  • Be determined to handle any challenge in a way that will make you grow.
  • I advise you to say your dream is possible and then overcome all inconveniences, ignore all the hassles and take a running leap through the hoop, even if it is in flames.

Video #4 – Les Brown Quotes: Shine with Courage

In these four Les Brown quotes, I offer you some thoughts about how to generate the courage and power to live your dreams. As you raise your belief in yourself, your reality changes accordingly. And that’s a good thing.

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • If you set goals and go after them with all the determination you can muster, your gifts will take you places that will amaze you.
  • You have the courage and power to live your dreams.
  • You need to make a commitment, and once you make it, then life will give you some answers.
  • Your level of belief in yourself will inevitably manifest itself in whatever you do.

Les Brown Quotes

What we do and accomplish is only the tip of the iceberg of what’s possible for us.

You must take action now that will move you towards your goals. Develop a sense of urgency in your life.

Take action in order to move toward your goals.

When you face your fear, most of the time you will discover that it was not really such a big threat after all. We all need some form of deeply rooted, powerful motivation — it empowers us to overcome obstacles so we can live our dreams.

Anytime you suffer a setback or disappointment, put your head down and plow ahead.

Just because Fate doesn’t deal you the right cards, it doesn’t mean you should give up. It just means you have to play the cards you get to their maximum potential.

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.

Believe that you possess a basic goodness, which is the foundation for the greatness you can ultimately achieve.

Your level of belief in yourself will inevitably manifest itself in whatever you do.

Begin to read a book that will help you move toward your dream.

You have the power to change.

Change is difficult but often essential to survival.

You cannot expect to achieve new goals or move beyond your present circumstances unless you change.

You don’t get in life what you want; you get in life what you are.

Other people’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality.

You need to make a commitment, and once you make it, then life will give you some answers.

Your ability to communicate is an important tool in your pursuit of your goals, whether it is with your family, your co-workers or your clients and customers.

Don’t let the negativity given to you by the world disempower you. Instead give to yourself that which empowers you.

If you don’t program yourself, life will program you!

I advise you to say your dream is possible and then overcome all inconveniences, ignore all the hassles and take a running leap through the hoop, even if it is in flames.

A lot of people do not muster the courage to live their dreams because they are afraid to die.

You gotta be hungry!

If you do not develop the hunger and courage to pursue your goal, you will lose your nerve and you will give up on your dream.

Be determined to handle any challenge in a way that will make you grow.

Help others achieve their dreams and you will achieve yours.

You have the courage and power to live your dreams.

One of the most essential things you need to do for yourself is to choose a goal that is important to you. Perfection does not exist — you can always do better and you can always grow.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars.

You must think of failure and defeat as the springboards to new achievements or to the next level of accomplishment.

Fear does not have any special power unless you empower it by submitting to it.

Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears.

You must remain focused on your journey to greatness.

You may not accomplish every goal you set — no one does — but what really matters is having goals and going after them wholeheartedly.

Forgive those who have hurt you.

Forgive yourself for your faults and your mistakes and move on.

Review your goals twice every day in order to be focused on achieving them.

As you reach your goals, set new ones. That is how you grow and become a more powerful person.

Choosing goals that are important to you is one of the most essential things you can do in order to live your dreams.

Goals are not dreamy, pie-in-the-sky ideals. They have every day practical applications and they should be practical.

If you set goals and go after them with all the determination you can muster, your gifts will take you places that will amaze you.

Life takes on meaning when you become motivated, set goals and charge after them in an unstoppable manner.

You are the only real obstacle in your path to a fulfilling life.

Someone’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality.

If you view all the things that happen to you, both good and bad, as opportunities, then you operate out of a higher level of consciousness.

If you are carrying strong feelings about something that happened in your past, they may hinder your ability to live in the present.

When life knocks you down, try to land on your back. Because if you can look up, you can get up. Let your reason get you back up.

If you put yourself in a position where you have to stretch outside your comfort zone, then you are forced to expand your consciousness.

The things you want are always possible; it is just that the way to get them is not always apparent. The only real obstacle in your path to a fulfilling life is you, and that can be a considerable obstacle because you carry the baggage of insecurities and past experience.

The only limits to the possibilities in your life tomorrow are the buts you use today.

Life has no limitations, except the ones you make.

Act the way you want to be and soon you’ll be the way you act

Surround yourself with like-minded and like-hearted people so you can step out of the story you’ve been living. You have the power to write your own script.

Leap and grow your wings on the way down.

You will fail your way to success.

When it comes to success, it will come when it comes. A delay does not mean a denial.

You underestimate yourself when you judge yourself on what you’ve done.

Wherever you find yourself, somehow you made an appointment to be there.

Train your inner conversation to serve you.

Always strive to get on top in life because it’s the bottom that’s overcrowded.

“How” is none of your business!
