Who is Earl Nightingale?

Earl Nightingale (March 12, 1921 – March 25, 1989) was born in Los Angeles, California. He was a pioneer in the field of motivational recordings.

The success-minded know Earl Nightingale for “The Strangest Secret” and “Lead the Field.” These two programs enjoy continuing popularity. The ideas Nightingale expressed are as relevant today as they were over 50 years ago.

He began his quest for a better life as a boy, looking for ideas about success in his local library.

After World War II, he began his career in radio. He was the announcer for “Sky King,” a popular radio show of the early 1950′s and a radio host on WGN radio in Chicago from 1950-1956.

He got the insight that would change his life at 29. While reading “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill, he realized that “we become what we think about.” This formed the basis for his career in self-improvement.

While doing his radio show, Nightingale proved his business mettle by striking a deal for advertising commissions. He also bought an insurance company and recorded inspirational messages for his staff.

These recordings led to “The Strangest Secret.” This was the first recording of the spoken word to win a Gold Record. “The Strangest Secret” sold over a million copies.

Lloyd Conant, a publisher and businessman, asked Nightingale to record some works for him. This led to Nightingale-Conant and a multi-million dollar self-improvement business.

In 1959, they launched “Our Changing World,” a 5-minute program about self-improvement. The program aired over 5,000 segments and was elected to the Radio Hall of Fame.

Why I Like Earl Nightingale, What I’ve Learned from Him, and Why I Included Him in this Website

I like Earl Nightingale because of the combination of simplicity and depth of his teachings.

For example, “You become what you think about.” How simple is that? Yet it has profound implications about which you could spend hours pondering.

And that’s the reason I included him in this website. His ideas add depth and substance that are quite beyond “motivation” as we might commonly use the word.

You don’t learn a lot that is new and revolutionary from Earl Nightingale. What he taught has been common knowledge to the wise ever since we lived in caves.

In my view, he had a wonderful knack for reminding you of ideas that you already know and of which you may have temporarily lost sight. That is, until he sparks a remembrance with that sonorous “radio” voice.

And he says things that are self-evident if you think about them. Even if the thought had never occurred to you, the wisdom and good sense ring true.

For example: If you were setting out to accomplish something and had no role models to emulate, you could get a good start by looking at what everybody else was doing – and not doing it.

Video #1- Earl Nightingale Quotes: The Strangest Secret

In the first video, I offer you some Earl Nightingale quotes from “The Strangest Secret.” Wise men and women of every era have known this secret and used it to make their lives richer and more rewarding.

If you found you way to this page, you likely know this secret already. So this video is to remind you, once again, that if you harness the power of your mind, then you change your life.

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • You become what you think about.
  • What’s going on in the inside shows on the outside.
  • Your world is a living expression of how you are using and have used your mind.
  • Our environment, the world in which we live and work, is a mirror of our attitudes and expectations.
  • You see, the very law that gives us success is a double-edged sword. We must control our thinking. The same rule that can lead people to lives of success, wealth, happiness, and all the things they ever dreamed of — that very same law can lead them into the gutter. It’s all in how they use it … for good or for bad. That is The Strangest Secret!

Video #2 – Earl Nightingale Quotes: Setting Goals

Earl Nightingale’s ideas about setting and achieving goals are simple and insightful. He has the insight that turns what some might call “work” into an intrinsically rewarding experience.

In this video, I build on four Earl Nightingale quotes and offer the keys to reaching your goals.

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going.
  • Picture yourself in your mind’s eye as having already achieved this goal.
  • See yourself doing the things you’ll be doing. Then you’ve reached your goal.
  • The more intensely we feel about an idea or a goal, the more assuredly the idea, buried deep in our subconscious, will direct us along the path to its fulfillment.
  • Get into a line that you will find to be a deep personal interest, something you really enjoy spending twelve to fifteen hours a day working at, and the rest of the time thinking about.

Video #3 – Earl Nightingale Quotes: Acres of Diamonds

“Acres of Diamonds” is a classic of self-improvement and personal development. Earl Nightingale was keenly aware that opportunity is always at hand.

In this video, I offer you some of his thoughts about priming your mind to fill your world with “acres of diamonds.”

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • The mind moves in the direction of our currently dominant thoughts.
  • Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become a reality.
  • Whenever we’re afraid, it’s because we don’t know enough. If we understood enough, we would never be afraid.
  • You are, at this moment, standing, right in the middle of your own “acres of diamonds.”

Video #4 – Earl Nightingale Quotes: Brighten Your Expectations

Earl Nightingale realized that each one of us is responsible for the sum and substance of our lives. In this video, I present some Earl Nightingale quotes that empower your mind to raise your expectations and “turn on your own light.”

Here are the quotes in this video:

  • People are where they are because that is exactly where they really want to be – whether they will admit that or not. They don’t realize they have another choice.
  • We tend to live up to our expectations.
  • We all walk in the dark and each of us must learn to turn on his or her own light.
  • Everything that’s really worthwhile in life comes to us. Do we realize it works this way and embrace it when it comes?

Earl Nightingale Quotes:

Creativity is a natural extension of our enthusiasm.

To achieve happiness, we should make certain that we are never without an important goal.

A great attitude does much more than turn on the lights in our worlds; it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change.

Our attitude towards others determines their attitude towards us.

Everything begins with an idea.

All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.

We can let circumstances rule us, or we can take charge and rule our lives from within.

Creativity is a natural extension of our enthusiasm.

A great attitude does much more than turn on the lights in our worlds; it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change.

All you have to do is know where you’re going. The answers will come to you of their own accord.

All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.

Don’t let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of your doing it. The time will pass anyway; we might as well put that passing time to the best possible use.

Our attitude toward life determines life’s attitude towards us.

We can let circumstances rule us, or we can take charge and rule our lives from within.

Wherever there is danger, there lurks opportunity; whenever there is opportunity, there lurks danger. The two are inseparable. They go together.

Everything in the world we want to do or get done, we must do with and through people.

The big thing is that you know what you want.

People are where they are because that is exactly where they really want to be – whether they will admit that or not.

All you have to do is know where you’re going. The answers will come to you of their own accord.

All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.

Always keep that happy attitude. Pretend that you are holding a beautiful fragrant bouquet.

Any person who contributes to prosperity must prosper in turn.

Creativity is a natural extension of our enthusiasm.

Excellence always sells.

Executive ability is deciding quickly and getting somebody else to do the work.

Ideas are elusive, slippery things. Best to keep a pad of paper and a pencil at your bedside, so you can stab them during the night before they get away.

Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don’t wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it’s at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored.

Our attitude towards others determines their attitude towards us.

People are where they are because that is exactly where they really want to be – whether they will admit that or not.

Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.

The big thing is that you know what you want.

The biggest mistake that you can make is to believe that you are working for somebody else. Job security is gone. The driving force of a career must come from the individual. Remember: Jobs are owned by the company, you own your career!

We all walk in the dark and each of us must learn to turn on his or her own light.

We are at our very best, and we are happiest, when we are fully engaged in work we enjoy on the journey toward the goal we’ve established for ourselves. It gives meaning to our time off and comfort to our sleep. It makes everything else in life so wonderful, so worthwhile.

We can let circumstances rule us, or we can take charge and rule our lives from within.

We will receive not what we idly wish for but what we justly earn. Our rewards will always be in exact proportion to our service.

Wherever there is danger, there lurks opportunity; whenever there is opportunity, there lurks danger. The two are inseparable. They go together.

You can measure opportunity with the same yardstick that measures the risk involved. They go together.

You’ll find boredom where there is the absence of a good idea.

Your problem is to bridge the gap which exists between where you are now and the goal you intend to reach.

Security can only be found within yourself.

If we are not getting better, we are getting worse.

We will become great in our work and reap commensurate rewards to the extent that we become one with what we are doing.

You never seriously desire something that you can’t possibly have. If you can envision how it will feel to satisfy your desire, then it will be yours.

You become what you think about.

What’s going on in the inside shows on the outside.
